Some History of Blue Polybutylene
Why was Blue Polybutylene used in my home? Blue Polybutylene Pipe or "blue poly", was installed for water service lines in the1980’s up until the mid 1990’s all over Georgia and many other areas of the south.
Easily installed and at about half the price of copper, this material was praised by building contractors and new construction plumbing companies as revolutionary, safe and more profitable.
Many New homes in Georgia and throughout the southern states were built with polybutylene plumbing... water service lines, interior piping, and fixture supply lines.
Polybutylene pipe was installed under driveways, below slabs and all over the home.
When homeowners started to have plumbing leaks and major water line problems, Polybutylene pipe lawsuits started to pile up. Eventually a class action settlement was reached to compensate homeowners. Unfortunately that deadline passed many years ago and homeowners today have to take care of the problem with their own funds.
Blue Polybutylene Replacement
The question will come up at some point if a complete repipe is needed. While some homeowners may choose to just repair the problem area, others decide to deal with the entire water line system. It's not uncommon to fix a leak, only to have to deal with another section of Polybutylene shortly therafter. Copper piping or CPVC are some reliable replacement options.
